The Finnmark Husky Safari

This unique tour starts from the comfort of the Husky Lodge outside Karasjok - in the heart of the Sámi country, Finnmark. From here it’s not long before we venture into the wilds, where we learn to master our sleds and dogs. Our journey ventures north easterly from Karasjok towards Alta. Our route follows a famous ancient trail that takes out from the forested lowlands into Norway's furthermost North. we journey through the frozen Arctic Tundra and after four days travelling we come out to overlook the Arctic sea, where we end the tour at the Ice Hotel, in Alta. This is quite a unique experience where everything is made from snow and ice, even down to the glasses in the bar! The hotel is also decorated with elaborate ice sculptures on both the interior and exterior. A fitting end to a great journey

Brief Day to Day Itinerary
Day 1
You will be met at the airport by your guide and a Direct Adventures Representative, before leaving directly for Karasjok and the Husky lodge.

Day 2
We spend the morning working alongside the local Sami people. We will organise the teams of huskies and learn the skills needed to mush our team of dogs. That afternoon is spent practicing these new skills and we will try some reindeer racing!

Day 3
This morning we set off with a steady climb up onto the mountain plateau. From here we travel out onto the snowy and frozen tundra. We stop for lunch, let the huskies rest and refresh before we head off towards our first wilderness night stop, the Gardin mountain cabin.

Day 4
Today we reach further out across Arctic Tundra; this is a fascinating landscape with endless views, up here the scene is stark, dramatic and windswept. Today is a real high point of the trip as we chase across the open snowfields. Our evening is spent around the fire, eating well and resting at the Mollisjok mountain cabin.

Day 5
Today we cross the largest lake in Finnmark, "Jiesjavrre", accompanied by seemingly endless miles of Arctic tundra. We really get a sense of Finnmark’s isolation. We spend that night in the warmth and comfort of our mountain cabin, Jotka.

Day 6
Our last day of mushing takes us up to the Arctic sea and the dramatic fjords. Our journey finishes at the famous Ice hotel, where our dogs are met by their handlers and we are met by hot showers! That evening we have our last supper in this spectacular hotel.

Day 7
Our program ends after breakfast when we transfer you to the Airport.

    Trip Requirements

    Visa Requirements
For short stay visits to Norway (up to 90 days) a visa is not required for the United Kingdom, North American, Australian,New Zealand, South African, Schengen or European Countries. We advise you to check with you embassy or consulate for further information and advice if needs be.
    Kit List
Its important to be prepared for all eventualities when out in the North Norwegian Tundra as the weather can change rapidly. You will require cold weather winter gear that protects and keeps you warm. Down is the most effective layer for warmth. A wind and wet stopper exterior layer for legs and body is very important. Winter gloves and a warm hat is a must. Be prepared to be hot while on the go but you may well feel the cold while stationary or at the end of the day.
    Rental Options
We have the option to rent traditional husky mushing gear (Reindeer Hide). This has proven to be highly effective clothing. This gear has stood the test of time and is still very much in use today.
    Local Customs
The area that we are mushing through is called Finnmark and this region is the traditional true home of Europes last and only indigenous people, who are called Sami. They are an ancient people that have lived in the Europes north; across Norway, Sweden, Finland and into Russia for at least 5000 years. Traditionally they were semi nomadic and followed the Reindeer and even today are responsible for caring and following the huge herds of the Reindeer through the summer months. The area we start our tour is in fact the Sami capital, Karasjok, which is home to Sami museums and the Sami Government. We meet and talk with the sami people and will eat with them as well.
