Our adventure begins with two of the high plateau, Mexican volcanoes, Popocatepetl, a volcano which is still active and Ixtaccihuatl; their peaks exceed 5000m, we continue on into a federal desert park filled with giant cacti and relics of the Cretaceous Period. We then approach the highest volcano in Mexico, the Pico de Orizaba, 5700m. We climb a high pass (4000m) and from here we descend into tropical forests across the Sierra Madre Oriental and finish in rich tropical rainforests, home to coffee, mango, papaya and banana plantations. Our tour continues on with a technical day trip in an astonishing canyon; washing dust away with jungle river rafting, then on to the rainforest of Catemaco, here there are monkeys, birds, waterfalls. We cycle along the sea shore.
Arrive Mexico City Airport. Here you will be met by one of our guides. There is a 2-hour transfer to Puebla via Estrella Roja.
After breakfast we ride towards volcano Xtaccihuatl in the north. We pass into dense conifer bushes. Upon reaching the lowland country fields, we return to Cholula beside a fresh, coldwater creek.
Transfer to Tehuacan We start with a climb that brings us to 2,000m with a beautiful view of the mountains of the Sierra Madre. A technical descent into a dry riverbed. The route is surrounded by the incredible cactus that cover the valley floor. A steady climb to the Cerro Gordo (2.500m). We then make the downhill run into St Juan Raya village.
Visit to the paleontological museum then remount and ride southwards, always accompanied by these fantastic giant cacti. We run again via dry riverbed into the area of Cretaceous fossils. After lunch transfer to Serdan city.
The route starts at 2.800mt on the Chipes hill. We make a circumnavigation of the Sierra Negra; our goal is arriving at the valley in between the Sierra Negra and Pico de Orizaba.
Today we reach the glacier (4200m) at the foot of the highest mountain in Mexico (5700m). Arrive at the Piedra Grande hut. Downhill to the village of Cajon. A triumphal finish in Tlachichuca at 2600m.Transfer to Perote.
A nice easy bike journey that starts today at 2800mt at Los Altos village for a trail that leads us to Rancho Nuevo on the east side of the Cofre de Perote, another volcano in the Sierra Madre.
We start with a great descent from Tembladeras village, through coffee plantations, mango trees, bananas and tropical vegetation. Getting to Xico village (1700m) we still have 30km to run and 1300m to descend. Much more fun to come.
A Temazcal is an enclosed structure, which has a small pit in the center and at least one entrance. Participants enter through the door and gather around the pit. The pit in the ground holds hot volcanic rocks. Water is drizzled on the hot rots to produce steam.
Climb to the plateau of Limon, at 600m. From here we start a serious technical down hill. Carry on, along the river. The track crosses the creek several times and arrives in Santa Maria. This section takes us back to the top of the plateau. The last part is a super-fun downhill to the Jalcomulco jungle lodge.
We begin our day trip with a journey across green hills then into the dense jungle surrounded by giant ferns, huge trees. We come back out into the sunlight, close to the ocean. Time for a well deserved swim! “Playa Escondita beach” to cycle along the shore.
Today, our route goes around Lake Catemaco. Lopez Mateo, where a group of local farmers have developed an eco-tourism project. Picnic lunch and then continue on to Poza Reina (Queen pool), some diving to cool off, group photos and again the last ride to end the tour on the shores of Catemaco lake.
