On this exceptional mountain bike tour we take you into northern Norway up to 71° north. This journey undulates across the Arctic tundra along awesome single track paths. We pass through rivers, marshes, riding over mountains under the midnight sun. Our route is sometimes demanding and offer tough challenges. The biking distance for this route is around 300 km. We will stay in lodges and camp out on the high plateau. This is true adventure biking; remote, challenging and completely unique.

Brief Day to Day Itinerary
Day 1
Arrive in Alta
You will be met at Alta Airport by the Direct Adventures rep and guide. Transfer to the hotel we will have time to have our supper and to build the bikes.

Day 2
Ride to Gargia Lodge
After breakfast and a bit of inevitable first day tweaking of our bikes, we will head off along local access trails and paths towards our first lodge, Gargia Lodge. This is great start as we travel south through the forests that surround Alta and head toward the Norwegian tundra. We ride about 45km today with no stress and plenty of time to enjoy this new route. In the evening we can relax and eat well in the lodge.

Day 3
Ride to Masi
Back in the saddle and once again we head south, riding from Gargia Lodge to Masi (65km). Today we get a real sense of Norway's untouched north. Our route takes us along the old wagon and gravel roads that have connected the Sami settlements for millennia. The Sami are the Norwegian Inuit people that have herded and cared for the reindeer through the seasons. Our path is undulating and is ideal for steady mile crunching. We immerse ourselves a little deeper into this landscape passing through woodland and alongside lakes and streams that seem to saturate this remote country. Tonight our accommodation is at The Masi Tourist Centre.

Day 4
Ride to Suosjavrre
After our comfortable overnight stop in Masi, we head out easterly towards the tundra plateau. Today's journey takes us along the old post road through wet swamps; we cross small rivers, and follow the trails along moraine and rock ridges. En route we will be visit "exotic" Raggis courtyard. Most of the day is spent off road but finally we find a path that takes us to Suosjavrre. Tonight we spend our night at the camp site.

Day 5
Ride to Mollisjok Lodge
Today we have an easy day as we follow a great path that heads directly north along a well trodden trail road to Mollisjok Lodge (26km). This is a traditional lodge that is used in both summer and winter by trekkers, bikers, skiers and hunters alike. We arrive quite early in the afternoon at Mollisjok, where we will have the opportunity to catch our supper! This whole area, Finnmark, is an Eldorado for trout, salmon and fishermen alike.

Day 6
Ride to Stabbursdalsvannene
From now on, we are into the Finnmark plateau. The landscape has a stark beauty. Endless hills roll ahead of us as we continue north towards our campsite at Stabbursdalsvannene. Today we experience the high plateau trails that are exhilarating and demanding, they tend to be wet and often steep. We push out alongside Finnmarks largest lake; riding along the east side of Lake Jesjavre. Our riding is along challenging, yet rewarding mountain bike paths which are considered locally to be some the best the area has to offer. Tonight we are staying in a campsite on the plateau, where we experience the true nature of this incredible landscape.

Day 7
Ride to Skoganvarre
Another great day ahead as we ride through Livnas to our camping huts at Skoganvarre (45 km). We are riding through the Finnmark plateau where the terrain undulates through wet, soft ground then onto rocky sections. The riding in the morning is more open, with gentle slopes that we climb and in the afternoon we descend off the plateau, passing through glades and wooded sections, there are technical descents as well. We pass Lake Leavnasjavre to finish with spectacular views as we make our way down to Skoganvarre camp site. We stay in huts alongside the lake. A relaxing and beautiful stop to another full day.

Day 8
Ride to Lakselv
Our last day of riding is again undulating; with a climb to get us away from the civilized Skoganvarre! Our route today is epic, with awesome views north, over Porsenger Fjord.  We ride through and over smooth rock sheets; we follow tight single track paths that weave through marshy lakes and we climb and descend the hills that stretch endlessly on. Finally we make our descent into Lakselv where hot showers, fresh linen, a hotel restaurant and a bar await us!! Tonight we breakdown our bikes, pack them up, and then celebrate our completed voyage.

    Local Customs
The area that we are riding through is called Finnmark and this region is the traditional true home of Europes last and only indigenous people, who are called Sami. They are an ancient people that have lived in the Europes north; across Norway, Sweden, Finland and into Russia for at least 5000 years. Traditionally they were semi nomadic and followed the Reindeer and even today are responsible for caring and following the huge herds of the Reindeer through the summer months. We will encounter the reindeer and will meet the sami people as well. Reindeer meat is very popular in the region and more than likely will be on our menu as well!
