You will be met at the airport to transfer you to Arusha and check in to your lodge. Our group accommodation has twin and single rooms.
We start walking from the Mormella Gate in Arusha National Park, up through grassland and then climb gradually into the rainforest. We arrive at Miriakamba Hut (2541m) tp settle down in our camp site. Aprox.5-6 hours walking.
We take a steep and sustained climb between Meru and Little Meru. The path continues through giant heather and other moorland vegetation to reach Saddle Hut. The afternoon is free to rest and enjoy the views. Approx. 4-5 hours walking.
In the early morning, our route will take the narrow ridge between the inner wall of the crater, which is sheer, and the outer sloping walls of the volcano. We slowly ascend Meru’s summit and make the detour to Rhino Point. We descend back down to Miriakamba. Approx. 10-12 hours walking.
Satisfied that you have prepared for Kilimanjaro we take the direct route down towards Mormella Gate through open grassland and mixed forest, with good chances of seeing wildlife and more game. We reach Mormella Gate by late morning; we then transfer back to Arusha to your lodge. Approx. 3 hours walking.
Today is considered by us to be of integral importance. You can enjoy sunshine by the swimming pool in your lodge and relax before trekking to Kilimanjaro.
We start from strenuous uphill walk of 10.5km. At the day’s end we reach the upper limit of the forest and the Machame Camp (3032m), with views over the treetops to the plains below. Your porters will have your tents erected and will be busy preparing dinner. Approx.4-6 hours walking.
The second day involves a steepish trek as we leave the forest behind and plough through the heath and moorland. We catch our first glimpse of Kibo, Kilimanjaro’s famed, snowy summit – and our ultimate destination. We approach the Shira Plateau and our final destination the Shira Cave Campsite (3847m). Approx. 5 hours walking.
The morning begins with a lengthy crossing of the plateau as we head due east toward Kibo. Lunch is taken near the Lava Tower (4530m). We finally reach the campsite for the evening, Barranco Camp. Barranco is a beautiful campsite on the route, set amongst the groves and hard against the south face of Kibo. Approx. 6 hours walking.
This morning we head eastward along the Southern Circuit. We scramble a 200m to the top of the Great Barranco Wall. After climbing out of the valley, we join the Mweka Route on a trail which ascends a steep ridge to Barafu Hut, standing amidst a desert of bleak tundra. We will stay in Barafu Camp. Approx. 6 hours walking.
Arising at around midnight, we begin our slow march up. After some five or six hours ascending - you reach the rim of Kibo Crater, close to Stella Point (5752m). From Stella Point we walk a 45 minutes further on, past glaciers and snowfields and with views over the Kibo Crater, to Uhuru Peak – 5895m the highest point in Africa! After Summit we head back down to Barafu Camp, where we take breakfast and relax for an hour, before continuing our march down the mountain, this time on the Mweka Trail. We make our final stop in the Mweka campsite (3100m). Approx. 14 hours (8-9 hours ascent, plus 5 hours descent).
It’s just a couple of hours further now from the campsite to Mweka Gate (1980m), where those who made it to the summit or Stella Point will collect their certificates. A car will be waiting to take us back to our lodge.
After descending from Kilimanjaro we stay in a lodge. The day is spent eating well, resting by the pool and generally used to recover from previous weeks achievements.
After breakfast we drive to Lake Manyara National Park, which is famous for tree climbing lions, abundant hippos and large flocks of flamingos. The park contains five distinct vegetation zones and is of scenic beauty.
From the Camp, we will take you for a game drive in the Ngorongoro Crater. This 2000 feet deep and 264 sq mile natural amphitheatre is the host to an astonishing array of wildlife, universally acclaimed to be eighth wonder of the world. It is the best place to see The Big Five: Elephants, Rhino, Leopard, Lion and Buffalo (all in one day).
In the morning you have last chance to see game and plenty of birdlife, possibly flamingos. After we head back to Arusha and take our transfer to the airport, where we catch our plane to Stone Town (Zanzibar).
You have the opportunity to explore the atmospheric, faded splendour of Stone Town, where you can amble through the narrow, whitewashed streets and make chance discoveries. You can take a half-day ‘spice tour’ or go to Prison Island, with a pristine beach and resident colonies of giant tortoise and peacock.
Transfer from Stone Town to your resort on the beach (about one hour’s drive). Here you can relax on the balmy, tropical shores of the Indian Ocean.
In the morning it may be possible to see some of the local fishermen, in their traditional dhows, bringing in their catch. Spend the days relaxing on the beach or snorkelling in crystal-clear water. Few optional excursions can be arranged through your lodge, such as scuba diving, boat excursions or fishing trips.
Today is another excellent day with free time to relax and enjoy further aspects of this truly wonderful country and its culture, whether you want to learn or extend your diving experience, go fishing or just simply to ‘hang out’ and take pictures of this incredible land and seascape.
Our trip ends in Zanzibar. We transfer you from the beach to the airport (about one hour drive) to get your direct flight to London.
